What are the age requirements to hiring a vehicle?
Minimum drivers age is 21 yrs of age and over. Driver must have a full licence and hold the current class of licence for the vehicle you wish to hire.
Do you require any bond to hire a vehicle?
Yes, we either take a signed credit card imprint (no amount processed) or cash bond or vehicle plus $50 bond as security for each hire.
Do you provide pick up and drop off from accommodation?
Yes, we can arrange pick up and drop off to hotels and motels locally, some advance notice would be appreciated.
Do you offer after-hour car rental pickups and drop-offs?
Yes, subject to prior arrangement and agreement. For after-hour pickups, we require the customer Rental Agreement to be signed and pre-paid in full at least 24 hours prior to pickup. U-Drive does not charge an additional administration fee for after-hour arrangements, however airport parking charges may apply for drop offs.
Is there a charge for additional drivers?
Definitely not. When you pick up your car rental you can add as many drivers to the rental agreement without incurring any addition charges. We prefer customers to have the option to share the driving.
Can I pay for the hire of the vehicle by credit card?
Yes. U-Drive Rentals accept both Visa and Mastercard. Eftpos facilities also available. Due to high commission charges, a 5% surcharge applies on American Express Cards. We also accept cash but are unable to accept payment by cheque.
What type of mechanical breakdown assistance is provided?
U-drive phones switch to an after hours number for emergency breakdowns. If no answer leave a contact name and phone number. Roadside assistance available between 7am – 9pm.
Can we take our rental vehicle on the Inter-Island Ferry Service?
Yes, vehicles can be taken on the ferry but they must be returned to Palmerston North as we do not have any other offices located around New Zealand.
What is the procedure for extending the rental period?
You can call us on (06) 355-3312 to have an extension authorized, subject to vehicle availability.
Does U-Drive offer diesel powered vehicles?
Our standard vehicles (cars) all feature petrol engines but our commercial vans and trucks have diesel powered engines.
Can I rent a vehicle on a Sunday?
We are closed on Sunday. However as long as paper work and payment is completed by the Saturday at 5pm arrangements can be made for the Sunday pick up.
Can I return a vehicle to your premises when you are closed?
Yes, we have an after hours key drop facility. Please ask to have this option explained to you.
Can I take your vehicle on the beach?
No sorry our vehicles are not insured on any beaches whatsoever.
Do you charge a cleaning fee if the vehicle is not returned clean?
Yes, we will charge a fee if the vehicle is returned filthy or if rubbish is left behind.
Do you do any one way hires?
Yes. U-Drive Rentals offers one way rentals within the North Island. Minimum hire periods and relocation fees will apply.
What happens if I need to cancel the booking or return my car rental early?
If you return your vehicle earlier than expected then no refund applies. We require at least 48 hours notice of cancellation. If you do not advise us that you wish to cancel your booking then we reserve the right to charge you a $50 cancellation fee.
If I pick up a vehicle on a Tuesday at noon and return it on a Wednesday at 4.30pm, how many days will I be charged?
All rates are based on a 24 hour day charge. Charge would be 1½ days.
Is Fuel included?
Yes, vehicle goes out on hire with a full tank and is returned with a full tank, otherwise we will charge you for what you have used, plus $10 refueling fee.
What do I need to bring to the office when I collect a vehicle?
The driver of the vehicle will need to provide their current Drivers Licence (Full) relevant to the class of vehicle they are hiring. If there are additional drivers we will also need the details of their licences. You will also need to provide a form of BOND. This is usually in the form of:
- A credit card (which will need to be signed for by the holder)
- $400 cash, or
- A motor vehicle with current registration, WOF and must be no older than 1990 plus $50 cash or eftpos, which is refundable on return of vehicle.
What happens if I have an accident, break down or need assistance?
Contact us straight away so we can advise how we can assist you. We are available by phone in an emergency 24 hours.
What is the difference between daily, weekly and weekend rates?
Daily rate are on a 24 hour basis. With trucks we usually have an 8.30am pick up or a 4.30 pm pick up time. Weekly rate are for seven consecutive days. The weekend special is from 8.30am Friday to 8.30am Monday, this is a three day hire. Unlimited mileage rates are available on some vehicle types only and we have a minimum of a 3 days rental for these.
What is your Insurance Excess?
Our insurance Excess is $2000 plus GST
Can I use my overseas drivers licence?
Yes. However if your drivers licence is not printed in English you will need to arrange for an International Drivers Licence. You must be over 21 yrs of age to hire a rental car in New Zealand.
